Introduction
The Arctic Warfare is a sniper rifle of UK origin. It is a further development of the PM series. The AW has become very popular among armies and special units around the world and has become the leading bolt action sniper rifle. The Magnum models have taken up in popularity in the recent years and the AWSM currently viewed as the standard model. The AWSM model currently holds the record for the longest range confirmed kill.
Design
The AW series is based on the earlier PM rifle. The Arctic Warfare designation has been derived from the bolt action system that allows it to function well even in freezing situations. Compared to the PM the AW features a variety of small ergonomic improvements. The polymer stock and aluminum chassis reduce the weight. The barrel is free floating and a two stage trigger is standard. Late production models allow for a variety of options including a Picatinny sight rail, rear monopod and front sight rail.
Firepower
The baseline AW rifle fires the 7.62x51mm NATO round from a 10 round box magazine. Additionally there are the AWM in .300 Winchester and AWSM in .338 Lapua. The effective range is claimed to be 1.000 m for the AW, 1.200 m for the AWM and 1.500 m for the AWSM. The accuracy is around 0.5 MOA when high quality ammunition is used.
Users
The AW and its derivatives are in use with over 30 nations. The AW is mainly used by European forces and special units. Additionally it is popular in South America and Asia.
AW
The AW model is the baseline model of the AW series. The AW is chambered in the 7.62x51mm NATO round and features a 660 mm barrel. The now discontinued AWP model was developed for police use. It differs in having a shorter 610 mm barrel without flash hider. It was also available in .243 Winchester. The need for the AWP has faded away and it has been discontinued. The color and shorter barrel length are now optional on the AW and the AE has been introduced as a cheaper model for law enforcement use. The AW-F is an AW with folding stock.

AWS
The AWS, or Arctic Warfare Suppressed, is a variant of the AW that is fitted with an integrated silencer. The silencer includes a short barrel in a much longer encasing. The AWS is able to fire both standard and subsonic ammunition. The effective range with subsonic ammunition is 200 meters and 450 meters with standard ammunition. The silencer is very effective. It reduces 85 dB(A) with subsonic ammunition and 109 dB(A) with standard ammunition. The AWC, or AW Covert, is a version of the AWS that is easier to transport and conceal. It can be quickly taken apart and features a folding stock and has a standard pistol grip. It has an even short barrel than the AWS.

The Arctic Warfare Magnum (AWM) fires the .300 Winchester Magnum from a 5 round magazine. It features a longer barrel with standard muzzle brake. The Arctic Warfare Super Magnum (AWSM) fires the .338 Lapua round from a 5 round magazine. The AWSM features an even longer barrel with a large muzzle brake. The folding stock versions are designated AWM-F and AWSM-F. The UK L115A1 is a standard AWSM and the L115A3 with a large variety of improvements such as folding stock, new scope, front sight rail, new bipod and detachable silencer.
